Whatever your situation with the school year ahead looks like for you, I’d like to start by saying

Parents, you got this! You are amazing, you are not alone and we are going to get through this together with our sanity intact.

This year has brought along so many questions, concerns, and difficult decisions as we cope with new challenges on a daily basis. The unpredictability and misinformation has caused massive amounts of stress that has made it difficult to plan ahead.

Decisions around the upcoming school year has left many of us with uncertainty, parent guilt and genuine confusion with the constant shifting and adapting that is expected of us.

And although we CAN'T control the situation or the world around us, we CAN chose to take care of our mind and body by embracing a vitalistic, salutogenic mindset and lifestyle.

Not sure what that means?

Read on to see how you can set yourself and your children up for a healthy school year and beyond with my:

Checklist:

Supplementation for Brain Health,

Gut Health,

and a Strong Immune System

Scientists at John's Hopkins Medicine have been studying a concept that may revolutionize our understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even our thoughts.

The brain-gut connection is also certainly applicable when trying to understand how certain vitamins, nutrients, and supplements are able to help our children thrive.

Here are 3 of my absolute favorite recommendations to help support developing nervous systems, immune systems, and enteropathic nervous systems in children:

1. Probiotics

SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete is a powerful prebiotic and probiotic that supports optimal digestive and immune health. It contains 4 billion CFU per serving in spore form – 99% of which will reach your lower digestive track alive. It also contains DE111® and LactoSpore®, which are two probiotic strains that promote digestive health and support normal digestion, as well as Prebiotic beta-glucan that strengthens the immune system and supports the growth of probiotics.

2. Omega 3's

This is a crowd favorite in my own home (and apparently on FullScript also). This chewable strawberry flavored Omega 3 supplement contains EPA and DHA which is essential for brain function and decreasing inflammation. Because it is currently backordered (it's that popular!) I have several other comparable recommendations - so if you are in a rush to get a quality Omega 3 supplement in your child's system before school is back in session, you can email me directly at drb@rochousecallchiro.com.

3. Multivitamins

For those days when our diet is less than adequate, Nordic Berry Gummies are my go-to! Nordic Berries contain essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants growing kids need, including full-spectrum B vitamins, which is hard to find in a gummy. No wonder they’re the #1 Children’s Vitamin in the U.S.! These easy-to-chew multivitamins come in two great flavors—sweet-and-sour citrus that captures the taste of Norwegian cloudberries, and cherry berry. Nordic Berries make an ideal companion to any Nordic Naturals omega-3 product.

As always, please reach out to me directly pertaining individualized guidance based on your situation and child's needs.

#2 on the Back to Health Checklist:

Ergonomic Support for Healthy Learning

1. Backpacks

If you follow me on social media, you may have seen my post regarding the significance that backpacks have on posture and physical development in children.

This is such an important part of our children's daily lives, which is why I'm excited to share this North Face ergonomic backpack endorsed by The American Chiropractic Association, which helps to minimize the physical and postural stress that children encounter when carrying overweight or improperly positioned backpacks.

2. Blue Light Blocking Glasses

For years, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended limited use of electronics and screen time because of the developmental problems it was shown to cause in growing children. However, over the past several months being stuck at home, it has been increasingly difficult to control a child's screen time. To complicate matters, many curriculums are going 100% virtual, which is sure to have unprecedented effects on our children's development.

For those of you who will be doing the majority of your learning from a computer screen, check out these adorable Kids FDA Registered Anti-Blue Light Glasses that help to filter out high blue light emitted from electronic devices like computer screens and tablets.

[Pic for attention]

Here is a photo of my 2nd grader and I wearing our blue light blocker glasses during his virtual summer school a few weeks ago (mine are prescription Ray Bans and his are linked above). His new glasses helped him maintain good posture while staring at his laptop for 2+ hours every day, and perhaps purely incidental, they also made him more attentive and excited to join his zoom calls.

3. Children's Wiggle Seat

If you're anything like me, you've spent the entire summer agonizing over creating a quiet, fun, and healthy at-home learning space for your children that will set EVERYONE up for success this school year.

For those times that your child may be stuck in front of a screen for any length of time, I recommend this stability wobble cushion for desk and computer chairs.

Sensory cushions have been shown to be an unobtrusive and effective tool to help kids who can’t stay still be more engaged and focused on their tasks.

One thing I love the most about the URBNFit Balance Disc linked above, is how multifunctional it is! I often recommend the wobble disc to adult patients who have desk jobs and experience back pain as a result of prolonged sitting. It can be used for therapeutic exercises and it provides more stability while taking up less space than an exercise ball. Each and every member of the family can literally take and use it anywhere!

#3 on the Back to Health Checklist:

Chiropractic Care

for Behavior, Coordination, and Attention

Children are anxious and under stress like never before and there is a huge need for natural therapies that help with quality of life issues that they face on a daily basis.

Chiropractic is quite possibly the most powerful tool for our children right now that can help relieve many of the physical, mental, and chemical stressors each and every day.

Addressing lifestyle factors like physical activity, sleep and nutrition,

as well as getting adjusted regularly,

helps children heal naturally, grow up strong, and maintain health.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association has endless articles, case studies, and peer reviewed literature to support this. Check out this article by the late Dr. Jeanne Ohm that explains how chiropractic adjustments restore normal nerve function and enhances our overall expression and quality of life. The article includes several examples of how chiropractic influences behavior in children too!
