On Friday June 25, Hammondsport Central School District held the graduation ceremony for the class of 2021. It's hard to believe that 17 years ago I sat in those same seats, wearing that same gown, hearing my own name announced for some of the same scholarships offered today.
Those very scholarships gave me indescribable financial and professional opportunities which have contributed to my growth into the Doctor that you see today.
Because of my positive experience, I always knew that I would pay it forward when I had the chance. Fortunately, this year I was finally able to offer the first ever Steven M. Dreiling Memorial Scholarship to graduating seniors planning to matriculate college in the fall.
Choosing the recipient of this years winner was no easy task. I was overwhelmed with emotions reading the applications and I know my dad would be so proud of every single person that took the time to apply.
With pandemic restrictions still in place and a one week old at home, unfortunately I was unable to personally attend this years ceremony to present the award myself. Luckily, with the help of modern technology, the award announcement was live-streamed on social media and available to everyone who wishes to view it. I’d like to send out a huge thank you to my high school guidance counselor Mr. Jim Derr, who worked with me over the past year to put this award together, get it approved by the Hammondsport BOE, and did the honors of announcing it at graduation.
I’d also like to send out a huge congratulations to Mr. Benjamin Cole, this years recipient of the Steven M. Dreiling Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000!
I’m currently working with my mom toward putting together a local celebration of life for my dad come summers end, where our goal is to start a foundation for this scholarship to be able to offer it for many years to come.
